RovingEyePhoto > This 1/20/09 shoot took place at a small repair shop devoted solely to old Porsche 356's. The passion within was palatable and obvious. Ferry Porsche (son of the famous Dr. Ing Ferdinand Porsche, founder of Porsche motors) designed and fabricated the first 356 in 1948. The car utilized a tubular chassis, an 1100cc engine mounted forward of the rear axle, and was very light and quick for the time. Though the car changed from mid-engine to rear, the tubular chassis gave way to unitized pan and body construction, and a myriad of other details evolved over the 22 year run of the model, the 356’s overall design and instantly recognizable shape remained the same, a timeless classic. Total production run was more than 78,000, about 1/2 of which are believed to exist today.
